Getting a good night's sleep is important for our health and happiness. When we miss on sleep, we're often groggy, irritable, suffer from low energy and struggle with memory. Unfortunately, getting a good night's rest is something that many of us struggle with.

There is a lot you can do to help yourself sleep, including eating right and exercising. In addition to lifestyle factors, paying attention to your sleeping environment can make a big difference on how well you sleep.

To create a sleeping environment that is conducive to a good night's rest, pay special attention to these areas...

Darkness

In nature, light is how our body knows when it's time to wake up and when it's time to go to sleep. It's actually instinctual for our bodies to respond to darkness by wanting to sleep and to light by wanting to wake up.

Obviously, keeping the room as dark as possible when you intend to sleep can have a major effect on how easily you fall asleep and whether or not you stay asleep. If there is a source of light you can't control outside your window, think about investing in some black-out curtains.

And try not to fall asleep with the TV going--the light and movement can interrupt your sleep.

Noise

Your sleep can be interrupted by any loud, sudden noises. It is not critical that your bedroom is completely silent, but it is important to keep noise to a minimum.

If you can't control the noise in or around your bedroom, try getting a fan or other appliance that makes white noise. Anything sounds that are consistent and low can help block out other sounds.

Temperature

Sleeping in a room that is too hot or too cold can lead to problems falling asleep and also cause you to wake up in the middle of the night.

If you can control the temperature in your room, try to find a setting that is comfortable to you. Everyone has different preferences, so you may have to try adjusting the thermostat a few times until you get it right. But when you do, be sure to remember what your optimal temperature is.

If you don't have climate control capabilities in your room, try experimenting with different bedding. It;s possible that something as simple as wearing socks to bed will be enough to get your body temperature right.

Mattress

If your mattress if uncomfortable, you may have trouble relaxing enough to fall asleep and stay asleep. Just like temperature, what makes a mattress 'comfortable' varies from person to person. You may have to try out a few before you know for sure what's right for you.

In addition to deciding between firm and soft mattresses, you should also think carefully about the materials your mattress is made from. For instance, a natural latex mattress made with wool will absorb moisture (which synthetics can't do) as well as repel dust, thus preventing allergens. This can make a big difference to the quality of yourself.

And if you have trouble getting comfortable on all traditional mattresses, try adjustable beds. These can be customised to support your body where it needs it--neck, shoulders, pelvis... Every body is different, and many people find that adjustable, ergonomic beds are their best choice for healthy sleep.

Relax/Mental State

You attitude towards your bedroom can be affected by what you do in there. For instance, if you regularly bring your laptop into bed in order to get some work done, you might find that you have trouble falling asleep. This is because, subconsciously, you associate bed with work and your body reacts to this.

Keep your room a work-free zone. You should also avoid watching TV or movies from your bed.

So true, a good mattress is important. I wonder what my boyfriend would think if I wore bed socks to bed though :)
