What's a holiday park?

'Holiday Park' is a term used in New Zealand, Australia and the UK to describe a campground with a wide range of accommodation and entertainment facilities.

If you're travelling through New Zealand, these holiday parks are a great accommodation option. Holiday parks play a major role in many New Zealand vacations, and are something of a national icon. Besides, they're affordable, clean, fun and located all over the country.

So whether you're looking for camping grounds in Kaikoura or self-contained apartments in Coromandel you should look no further than the nearest holiday park (and there is always a holiday park nearby...).

Read on for more information about these great accommodation options...

Accommodation options

One of the major benefits of holiday parks is that they offer a wide range of affordable accommodation.  Here are the typical options:

  • Tent sites: Usually just a grassy area for you to pitch your tent or park your van.  Cost is often around $40/night for two adults.
  • Powered motorhome sites: These sites are available for anyone travelling in an RV or using a tent and requiring access to electricity.  The sites have power points and often a water supply.
  • Hostel/lodge accommodation: Many holiday parks offer hostel-style beds.
  • Cabins: These are private units that are ideal for families or groups looking for a little privacy.  Cabins can range from basic (with bunk beds and a table) to fully-equipped with a kitchen and TV.  Cabins guests typically use the shared bathroom facilities.
  • Self-contained units: These apartments come with bedroom, kitchen and bathroom amenities, much like a traditional hotel room, but with access to the holiday park's facilities.

Facilities

All holiday parks offer the facilities necessary for a comfortable and pleasant stay, including bathroom and shower areas, kitchen access, laundry and a lounge area.

Holiday parks are designed to provide comfortable accommodation and entertainment.  With a range of great facilities, staying at a holiday park becomes an activity all its own.

Kids love staying at holiday parks, which often come equipped with playgrounds and swimming pools.  But the fun extends to adults too, who can enjoy BBQ facilities, TV/Movie rooms and the company of other travellers.

Facilities vary from park to park, and here are just a few of the activities available at some of the holiday parks around New Zealand:

  • Swimming pool
  • Spa
  • Playground
  • DVD/TV room or DVD player rental
  • Internet access
  • Petanque
  • Games room
  • Bike/kayak hire
  • Tour booking

Locations

Holiday parks are found all over New Zealand, and you can easily find them while driving around.  Just follow the yellow signs that say 'Holiday Park'...  You'll find them in most towns.  Alternatively, a quick internet search for holiday parks near your destination will yield plenty of results.

Tourist hotspots like Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown and Kaikoura, New Zealand are obvious choices for holiday park accommodation, but even small towns in rural areas have some great options.  Often, holiday parks in rural areas offer a more laid-back and less crowded stay.

Many parks are part of larger groups (such as TOP 10 holiday parks) and offer rewards and discount cards for loyal customers.  If you're planning a long trip around the country, it may be worth looking into joining one of these programmes.  In which case, you will benefit from planning your destinations out in advance, with the intention of staying in your favourite group of holiday park throughout your travels.
